Equine Viral Arteritis: Essential Facts About the Disease

نویسنده

  • Peter Timoney
چکیده

Although outbreaks are uncommon, equine viral arteritis is an important disease because of the potential risk of abortion in mares and establishment of the carrier state in a relatively high percentage of infected stallions. Equine arteritis virus carrier stallions constitute an important reservoir of infection, and appropriate precautions have to be taken when nonimmunized mares are inseminated with virus-infective semen. Equine viral arteritis is a manageable infection and prevention programs have been developed that have proven successful in controlling this disease. Authors’ address: Maxwell H. Equine Viral Arteritis

Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is a contagious viral disease of equids caused by equine arteritis virus (EAV), an RNA virus that is classified in the family Arteriviridae. The virus is found in horse populations in many countries worldwide. EVA cannot be differentiated clinically from a number of other respiratory and systemic equine diseases. While laboratory-confirmed outbreaks of EVA have been...

A longitudinal study of poor performance and subclinical respiratory viral activity in Standardbred trotters

INTRODUCTION While clinical respiratory disease is considered a main cause of poor performance in horses, the role of subclinical respiratory virus infections is less clear and needs further investigation. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES In this descriptive longitudinal study the relationship of markers of subclinical respiratory viral activity to occurrence of poor performance in racing Standardbred tro...

Rt-pcr as Effective Detection Method of Equine Arteritis Virus in the Semen of Naturally Infected Stallions

The aim of the study was to present the usefulness of one tube reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction assay (RT-PCR) in comparison to virus isolation test (VI) in the detection of equine arteritis virus. The group of 82 semen samples taken from different stallions was examined. Equine arteritis virus was isolated in RK-13 cell monolayers from the seminal plasma of 11 animals. The same ...

Evaluation of neutralization patterns of the five unique Argentine equine arteritis virus field strains reported.

Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is a contagious viral disease that frequently causes mild or subclinical infections in adult horses. Only one EAV serotype has been described. However, there are differences in antigenicity, pathogenicity and neutralization characteristics of virus field strains. The interaction of two viral proteins, GP5 and M, is critical for infectivity and amino acid changes in ...
